While in the alembic of its prison-formed chain, In radiance bright its seven-fold power expands; For now no longer locked in prison bands The sunbeam wakened to a new-found birth With Beauty's Arch of Promise girds the earth. So childhood's pure, white light of soul awakes, As on loved Alma Mater's prism it breaks: For bound in Learning's sacred clasp it lies Till Art its latent beauty glorifies. Then Io! the light immortal bursts Its bands And the Arch of Character in strength expands, To cast upon the heart its radiance bright And form Life's rainbow of supernal light. Like silver strains of unforgotten song Enriched by liquid "Heart Tones" pure and strong The gentle cadence of our girlhood's days Drawn forth by artists, skilled in childhood s ways; In tuneful melody has floated by Beneath a ruby-tinted morning sky. Whose passing clouds with loving eye we view, Today o'er-wreathed with dawning's golden hue. And though slight discords oft the cadence broke, Self-sacrifices under-tones then woke, For all harsh notes in harmony were blent By those whose lives in sacrifice are spent; And Alma Mater's alms and ends were taught By many a silent act and generous thought. And though their tutelage may now be past, May the rhythm of their lives be cast Around our life-framed symphonies or time Imbibing them with childhood's notes sublime. But when in future years some echo plavg On hearts attuned to joy in youth's bright days. Will then these echoing "Heart Tones" sweet and ure Throughout our future life in strength endure? And souud the keynote of the life to be, Wrhose strains since first wrought into melody Have rounded out in fuller chords of love To blend in harmony with those above? Beloved Bishop, choral chords of praise For you, our grateful hearts must ever raise, Whose character and vital earnestness Have stamped upon our hearts their deep impress. When you, loved Father, our soul's guiding star, First turned our budding thoughts to realms afar And the daily efforts of your zeal and care 4 Enriched our lives with gifts of grace and prayer. Then gently woke the fuller chords of soul And made the rhythm of our young lives roll In richer strains of deeper melody, Attuned to spiritual harmony. j And now when parting draws our souls more near, Your efforts cherished memories endear. While gratitude in every classmate's heart Vibrates in unison, ere ve depart Oh. let us hope that when life's course is run All harmonies of soul may blend in one, That we'll leave not footprints on the sands of time. But living "Heart. Tones" wrought by lives sublime! Mary Donaghy, Class '01. Sacred Heart Academy, Ogden, Utah. |
