Show Jesuit Writer Dead. ! Rev. Jas. H. Hayes, S. J., prominent promin-ent for the great interest he took in the Catholic press, died recently at Chicago, the scene of his labor for tiie past 30 years. Amidst the varied I duties of his priestly career he ever! kept in view the power of the press for furthering the interests of the Church, and always gave it his staunchest support; Some-time before he left St. Louis the St. Louis Times, Si. Catholic daily, was established by Mr. B. M. Chambers, a prominent Catholic of that city, and the encouragement encour-agement given this venture by Father Hayes was one of its valuable assets. It was after his transfer to Chicago, Chi-cago, however, that his activity in this line was especially noteworthy. There he edited the "Little Be." a monthly magazine, and the "Catholic Home," a diocesan publication, which ' later developed into the New -World seeing the gret't fund of authoritative authorita-tive doctrine on the important ques- j tions of the day, contained in the let-j ters of the Popes, in order to bring' this before the people ho undertook j to collate a number of valuable se- lections from these writings an-l later: published them under the well known , title "Chips from the Block of Peter."! He was engaged for a long while als ! in writing and publishing the "Catholic "Catho-lic Penny Leaflets.' another means of' bringing Catholics in close touch! with Catholic doctrines. j He was perhaps no less remarkable! for his skill and energy in organizing organiz-ing and promoting Catholic societies, and his zeal in the cause of Temper ance was productive of much fruit. The most remarkable thing in the life of Father Hayes was his patience in the intense suffering he endured from his eyes during th" lut 0 years. He was 83 ytars of age. |
