Show THE PASSING OF "THE NATIVE SON." Speaking to a large and attentive audience in the Tabernacle a few Sundays ago. Dr. Middleton Paid: "The Polish Jew, the Italian and the Irish are crowding out in the New England states the educated descendants of the Pilgrims and the Puritans." Pur-itans." Here is how the fighting Irish are doing the crowding. We take our figures from William S. IiOKsitcr, a census official of Washington, D. C: 1 In Massachusetts, 3.r)5 persons in every thou- Isand of total population reported in 1906 as mein-, mein-, j bors of the Catholic Church; in Rhode Island, 400; Connecticut, S)S; New Hampshire, 277; New York, ' " 27S. Some of these proportions arc double those shown sixteen years before. , The non-Catholic communicants per 1.000 of ' the states mentioned, numbered about 148 in Mas sachusetts, 131 in Rhode Island, 195 in Connect- . h icut, 149 in New Hampshire, and 150 in New York; and practically all show a decline per 1,000 of total population from 1S0O to 1906. In Massachusetts, with a population of a little lit-tle more than 3,000,000, approximately 900,000 are descendants of the native stock, and probably over 1.000,000 persons in the commonwealth are available avail-able from which to draw membership for the non-Catholic non-Catholic denominations, and this is practically the same number that were thus available in 1S50. The same official says that the non-Catholic population has not increased in New England for sixty years. The Doctor is in error when he talks of the Polish Jew and the Italian crowding out the New Englander. It is the Irish, the fighters and tho men of stalwart faith, and the prolific and hardy French Canadians, also men of stubborn faith, who are filling the lands and the places left vacant and open by a perishing race. There is no "crowding." "crowd-ing." The unprolific and childless New Englander is dying from race suicide, lie is dead. The "prominent citizen of Boston," the Doctor's friend in mourning, is all that is left of the New Englander. Eng-lander. Peace to his ashes; he was a bigot; we can have no quarrel with him; he is in his grave. Isaias was right, unquestionably right, when he prophesied: "For the nation and the people that will not serve God shall perish. And the stranger shall come in and take the vineyards and the sons of the stranger shall be found in the seats of honor." |
