Show Effect of Moderate Drinking. That excessive indulgence in alcoholic beverages bever-ages shortens life has never been seriously disputed; tlie effect of moderate drinking on longevity, on the other hand, lifts hitherto seemed to be one of the insoluble puzzles. ' What appears to be a most important im-portant contribution to the discussion is a paper prepared under the auspices of certain life insurance insur-ance companies in England by Mr. Roderick Mackenzie Mac-kenzie Moore. Obviously, the only convincing method of pursuing such an inquiry was by taking full statistics, over a generation or more, of many thousands of individuals in. 'two great groups of moderate drinkers and total a Detainers, each group being as nearly as possible of- the same number, average age ami social condition. Mr. Moore has done this. His investigation extends over sixty-one years and includes 124.1)7.'! individuals. He now submits that as regards ihese ca-es the following proposition has been conclusively proved: "That (he abstainers show a marked superiority to the non-abstainers non-abstainers throughout the entire working years of life, for every class of insurance policy, and for both sexes." WJien it is remembered that the com- parison is between abstainers and moderate, not ! excessive, drinkers, the value of Mr. Moore's researches re-searches is at once cb.ar. Xor will popular confidence con-fidence in them be lessened by his scientific temper and restraint of exprossiou Ave Maria. a |
