Show SLIDING SCALE MJWOSED Montana Miners and Smelter-men Smelter-men Disposed to Avoid Going on Strike. Butte. Mont.. Feb. 28. While there is no outward evidence of any change in the laber situation tonight, there is an undercurrent which portends an early settlement of all differences whie:h may exist be.tween the mine and smelter em ployes and the mine managements. It has been iinjn.s.sible to learn anything definite of the result of the conference between the committees from the Mill and Snieltermen's union, the Engineers' union and the Butte Miners' union, but it is secretly reported that much progress pro-gress has been made toward adjustment. adjust-ment. From a very good source it is learned that the smelter men and miners min-ers will accede to a sliding scale, whjch will fix the wages of mine anel smelter employes at a flgur commensurate with the skill requheel. In any event, I however, the lowest day's wage will be $3 75. There is positively no fear of a I close-down of the mints or of a strike-, and there is every indication that within with-in a week or two the mines of all tho companies will be running full blast, including development work. |
