Show ' catholic University. Annual Meeting and Banquet of the Alumni Association. A matter of great interest to the uni-veisity uni-veisity is the coming of the committee appointed at the last meeting of the board of trustees, in order to study the problem of the university development, both from an academic, as well as from a financial point of view. Many plans will be discussed, and it is felt a great impetus will be given1 to the university univer-sity work. The committee consists of Right Rev. John L. Spalding. D. D., chairman: Most Rev. John J. Keane, D. D., and Right Rev. Camillus P. Maes. D. D. The annual meeting of the Alumni association of the university is always an occasion of pleasurable anticipation to the past students of the university, and the meeting and banquet held at Baltimore on Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 4. was among the most successful in the history of the Alumni. The banquet was very successful, and it was graced by the presence of His Eminence Cardinal Gibbons, who made a brief address,' in which he expressed ex-pressed his satisfaction at so large a garnering, ana nis qeep interest in me university. He was also pleased that so many of his priests had studied at that institution. The first toast was "Leo XIII." and was responded to by the Right Rev. Rector. Bishop Conaty. who spoke of the deep love of the Holy Father for the university. Its founder and special spe-cial protector, he had always evinced the greatest concern in its development. develop-ment. Bishop Conaty alluded to the manifestations of this interest in the honors which he had showered upon it recently, in the election of members of its administration and teaching corps to positions of greatest honor. He urged loyalty to the ideals of the great Leo. and said that devotedness to the university and its, development would be the best means of proving that loyalty." loy-alty." Other toasts were responded to as follows: "Our Country," Mr. Clarence E. Martin, Mar-tin, Martinsburg. W. Va. "Our Alma Mater." Rev. Maurice L. Hassett. Harrisburg, Pa. "Our Hosts, the Baltimore Alumni," Rev, Martin O'Donoghue. Baltimore. Very Rev. Dr. Garrigan, the vice rector of the university, also made a brief address, in which he emphasized the duty of every alumnus to do all In his power to make the university known and loved. |
