Show AN IRISH ARBOR DAY, According to a Dublin correspondent, a proposition propo-sition has been put forward to make Inland's na- tioual holiday, St. Patrick's day, Arbor day as well. It is every day becoming more and more noticeable that Ireland is being so rapidly deforested that very soon it will be difficult to obtain even the rough timber required for farm purposes, and that if something is not done, and that quickly, the island, which was known to the ancients as the Island of the Woods," will soon be denuded of trees. If the idea of planting even a few trees every 17th of March in honor of. the patron saint were carried out, it would do a great deal to bring back to. the country its old-time look. Xow, too, when the land is passing from the landlords to the tenants, under, the new land act, the timber will suffer more than ever, as there will not be the same restriction on cutting the trees. In one part of thu north of Ireland, when some few years ago a London Lon-don company sold out an estate to the tenants, there were plantations covering" some 500 acres. Two-thirds Two-thirds of the plantations were cut down at once and . the remainder is being done away with. -Xow the people of the district are beginning to realize their ; mistake, as in the past inclement season stock and - cre-ps have suffered alike from want of shMteV.'and the farmers would bo very glad if they to'u.d'piit all the. trees back again.
