Show U US S SU SURVEY WORK FINISHED fint A GREAT COAL FIELD IN EMERY parts of emery county are with vast beja beds of mancos coal accord ing to the findings of the government party of geological surveyors sur orv who have been working all summer in emery county and who stopped work liast week nothing further will be done until spring the party started at mounds last spring and worked southwest through emery county testing a strip of territory about five miles in width when work waa was atop stop ped last week the outfit had reached ivy creek south of emery the country was thoroughly tested for coal but none was encountered until the outfit was in the neighborhood of emery at rochester nine miles north of emery the party encountered unmistakable signs of coal which they followed fol owed to ivy six miles south of emery their work shows that from rochester to ivy creek a distance of fifteen miles the country is with a vast coal bed ranging in thickness to from three to twenty feet the bed Is known to be five miles in width and is probably much wider what lies south and west of ivy creek where the party stopped work cannot be said but it seems likely that the coal bed extends many miles beyond that pint p int tho the coal found ia Is what Is known as alancis und is in workable quantities a all 11 most all the way from rochester to ivy creek nothing was done by the government party to learn the depth of the bed as they work solely from surface indications but it ii Is very probable that it is within easy reach as are most of the coal beds of carbon and emery counties the party part all summer long ion kept R an a n py eye open bor for indications OT of oil iab but ut found nothing to indicate the presence of either oil or gas in the territory traversed there were five ilya men in the party which waa was under the direction ofa of C T lupton the force will return next spring and resume their work at ivy creek |
