salt lake home after an illness of only thirty minutes president smith retired at ten thursday night apparently in good health and excellent spirits he ile slept soundly for nearly two hours being awakened at 11 1145 45 by an hemorrhage at 0 the lungs his wife was attracted by his violent coughing medical aid was summonsed summonses summon sed his family and a few friends were gathered at his bedside and the endgame end came in just half an hour president smith b nith had been buffering suffering for several weeks from f corn pleurisy but it is not thought that this had even a remote connection with his death at the time of the spring conference this year president smith suffered an hemorrhage of the lungs but apparently recovered fully from the effects john henry smith was 1 horn at car bunca buries iowa september 18 1843 he was the eon son of the late president smith and sarah ann labbay Lib bay smith his ills parents had been driven from illinois and missouri with the rest of the members of the church and it was while they were at Car bunca bunea near council bluffs that their son was born his father had accompanied president brigham young and the first company of pioneers to the great salt lake valley the year before and with some of them had also returned to the missouri river upon his arrival there he proceeded proceed d to make arrangements for the removal in new york on july 4 and before sailing paid a short visit to his mothers brothers brother then residents resi reside deits its of new hampshire he ile arrived in liverpool england on july 26 and reported to his cousin joseph F smith then president of the european mission by him he was assigned to the duty of a travel hg elder in the birmingham conference dundei the direction of elder richard other high officials of the mission to denmark germany switzerland and france after a lapse of a year he was called to utah by the sican sickness ss of hia his father and reached salt lake in time to spend fifteen days at bis his fathers bedside previous to his death on september 1 1875 he ile again took up the active work of the church in utah and on novem her ber 22 2 1875 was appointed bishop of the seventeenth ward for salt lake city which position he filled with efficiency and zeal for five years tears during this period he was also employed by the utah central railway company at the general conference confer erce of the church in october 1880 the first prest presidency of the church was reorganized and elders francis at lyman find john henry smith were called to fill vacancies in the quorum of the twelve being ordained on the day of that month he was again called to go on a mission to england by president john taylor this time october 1882 to act la as 1 of the european mission while thee he visited the various c a 1 feren ferencek fe ces in england and traveled extensively teni ten ively in france and italy being absent from home a period of twenty nine months VV ba upon the division of the peoples party and the liberals upon national political lines ho he was ore of the first to advocate the principals of the republican party and was always an active worker in that party lie ile we was president of the convention that formed the cor under which utah was admitted into the union aa as a state since his call to the apostleship elder smith devoted practically all of his time except when absent from the country on missions he traveled almost constantly among the stakes of the church attending conferences instructing and en curag ing iniz the members
