Show 'Our Democracy9- Cartoonist ' ' . 4 ft - Hubert J. Mathieu ("Mat") Hubert J. Mathieu, who draws the "Our Democracy" cartoon series, se-ries, has been nationally known for years as an illustrates of stories stor-ies and serials in uch magazine as the Saturday Evening Post, Colliers, Col-liers, Ladies Home Journal, Mc-Calls, Mc-Calls, Cosmopolitan. Mr. Mathieu's first paid job was as a farm hand, and lie owns and lives on a farm today. Born in Brookings, S. D., the son of the late Hubert B. Mathieu, dean of South Dakota State College at Brookings, the artist worked as a boy on nearby farms. He graduated gradu-ated from South Dakota State college col-lege in 1919. In his years of success suc-cess he has gone back to the land. He owns and lives on 150 acres in Bucks County, Pa. The farm which this year has 20 acres in corn, 20 in wheat and 15 in oats, as well as well as hay and truck, is operated op-erated for Mr. Mathieu by his nearest neighbor, on shares. Mr Mathieu says the farm pays both him and the neighbor. The series of cartoons "Our Democracy," De-mocracy," scheduled to appear weekly in this paper, Mr. Mathieu draws partly on his farm and part, ly in a studio he rents in New York, where the photograph above was taken. Mr. Mathieu is of American Revolution Rev-olution stock, of Freuch, DutacTi and English ancestry. He is married mar-ried and has four children. His uncle, Oscar Mathieu, is senior, agronomist of the U. S. Department of Agriculture, at Washington. |
