D Roosevelt noose Roose velt would have won a sweeping victory had he been running for or reelection reelection re reo election on November 8 In fact act one wonders onders why hy Harold L. L Ickes normally normally nor mally so positive about everything would only say I think the dent would have won The answer 1 Is very simple It Is based baaed on the states that the Democrats Democrats Demo Demo- carried conclusively and eliminates dim elim mates partial victories These give the Democrats a total of electoral elec dec toral votes As It requires only electoral votes Totes to name a President It would appear that the Democrats had a avery avery very decided advantage on November November Novem Novem- ber 8 though the headlines for foi the next few days and end for that matter ever since have been telling a different dif dlf- ferent story or at least giving a at t different impression Incidentally there are 25 states k in the list represented in the senate senate sen sen- ate of course by CO ISO senators A majority of the senate Is 49 It so 10 happens that just 49 Democratic senators represent those states at present That fiftieth senator Is George W. W Norris of Nebraska who votes with the New Deal more often than most mOlt Democrats Actually there are several leveral other ways of 01 calculating which would I give the Democrats an even greater majority ma mat t of electoral votes vote I. I For Instance t If LI the test tet were the majority of statewide statewide state state- S wide officers or their importance I Indiana would have haveS S to be added to the Democratic list forA for A A j Sen Frederick Van 1 Nuys was elected Senator Or If it the majority of Van an an Nu Nuys total votes for congressmen con con- gressmen were the test Colorado which also reelected elected a Democratic senator Alva B. E Dewey who was only defeated by around But the plain fact Is that the Democratic Dem ticket carried New York by bye e halt half a million millions and Dewey ran some lome ahead of his ticket Voters who wanted to vote straight Democratic Demo Demo- k cratic except for Dewey cut for him to that tremendous extent Out But It Is ls lets len than halt half as good a showing show ing tog as Alfred AUred E. E Smith made in tn 11 1920 when he ran a million votes kt ahead of his ticket and yet Jet was It t defeated Ii i Also Mao Dewey was running against Herbert H. I appraise their strength as a result f of the election they having triumphed tri trl over their New Deal foes it S so 10 impressively in the primaries r Three of the most outstanding tr Democratic victories in the nation on November 8 were in Maryland here Sen Millard E. B Adams triumphed handsomely although the Republicans won just as al easily in their light fight to elect a governor Iowa presents the same picture with the Republican trend proved by b heavy huY congressional gains as well as b by bythe bythe the election of a Republican governor gov George Wilson and yet the triumph by a small majority of Sen Guy M. M Gillette In fact of all aU the nine Democratic Democrat Demo Demo- cratic cratie lena senators tors who voted against the President on the Supreme court Issue the only one to fall by the wayside was Augustine Lonergan of Connecticut Which i is rather curious curl curi ous ous for Lonergan never capitalized his opposition to the President lie He was wal fond of 01 remarking In the cloakroom cloak room I vote against the President President dent when I disagree with him but butI I dont don't talk against him Lonergan Loner gan never made a speech against any White House proposal Thus he never gave the Connecticut newspapers newspapers news papers a chance to exploit him In dramatic fashion It is probable that nothing could have saved him Forces over which he ic had no control were working against the whole Democratic ticket In in the Nutmeg state There were scandals calculated to hurt the whole ticket and the Socialists piled d dup up ip an art enormous vote In winning tour our of the six congressional seats all of which were held by Democrats Democrats Demo Demo- the Republicans defeated Herman Her Her- man P.
