| Show Creek Water Vater Sealing Proves I Very Successful Readers of ot the Record will Ul no doubt recall reading a report of a discussion discussion discus discus- sion b by Lewis C C. C Stubbins of If Jo Loa Loy Angeles In which he claimed that conservation conservation conservation con con- of water was practicable inmany Inmany In Inmany many streams of this section of the state and referred to the eXperimentation experimentation tion In sealing by chemical process the bed of the stream owned by Arch which lies some five or six miles west of this city A number of our readers who had made perusal of the report and criticised quite severely giving It as their opinion that no such sealing sealing seal seal- ing of creek beds could be done by chemical and that In all probability It was Just another scheme to garner some easy money In order to satisfy ourselves and to give a correct report of what has been done on the stream the manager accompanied by John P. P Fuller Arch arid and Mr Stubbins Stubbins Stubbins Stub- Stub bins visited the creek Monday mornIng morning morn morn- Ing and here is what was discovered For a distance of at two and one half miles mUes the creek bed had been sealed with the water seal chemical and the flow of water Increased at the lower end of the distance to about five times the amount that had previously previously previously pre pre- arrived at the ranch house Mr Stubbins had secured the services services ser set vices of Leland Perry to place a weir at the west end of the distance an and also one at the east end and had the about two weeks ago proceeding the sealing of the creek bed At the upper upper upper up up- per end of at the creek the flow now was nearly a second foot of water which at the lower end It was about one fifth firth of that amount one week after the sealing had been under way the stream had Increased to nearly as much at the lower end as was running running running run run- ning at the upper end positive proof that the Water Seal made the bed I of the creek water proof at least 80 per cent water proof Several Instances of sealing of water channels are known in California and each have proved to be efficient an to this day the water In each is prevented from seeping into the ground and becoming lost In two or three places on the creek where there have i been breaks in the bed of creek I which were leaking water the water proofing was used and now the leaks have entirely stopped It seems that this chemical would be Just as eft effective ive In preventing water water wa wa- ter In reservoirs to seep away and we understand that the reservoir of the So Utah Power company Just a mile mUe west of at Cedar is to be treated and ard it is expected that it will wUl prove as successful as in canals or creeks We advise any person who is at atall atall atall all skeptical to take a drive out t tJ to the ranch and see for themselves themselves themselves them them- selves Just what this water proofing chemical will do the chemical filling the sand and gravel so that the rater aster ter could not seep through and into the ground The creek Is the first Utah experiment to be completed al although although although al- al though there are several others in preparation for the sealing The chemical used is tasteless and absolutely poisonous non-poisonous and comes in the form of at a finely ground powder which is dropped in the water and settles to the bed of at the creek as downward dO When the water moves it first placed In the water it causes the thc water to become milky white which settles settles settles set set- soon disappears as the chemical to the bed and and- penetrates the sand and gravel It is estimated that the chemical will wm penetrate to a depth of ot two feet closing all pores In n the soil and so far has been known kno to two over closed for keep th the pores and one half years or since it was first I that it has been In discovered and 1 operation for that length of time andis and andis when as 1 is still In as good condition first placed The is manufactured by the Water Seal Co of Los Angeles and the work done in this locality is under the supervision of Lewis Le C. C stubbins of Los Angeles with Chas B. B Brownlaw Brown Brown- Quick also of Los Lo la law wand and Robert Angeles expert helpers It is estimated that creek beds bed and canals can be sealed by this process of ot sealing at 15 per cent of the cost with cement as is done in some sonic parts puts of northern Utah The material is applied and results easily and quickly are almost at once apparent Mr Stubbins is a hydraulic engineer considerable considerable considerable consider consider- by occupation but has had the sealing of ot able experience In and unquestionably creek beds and canals understands the business |
