Show Sophomores Outstanding on Aggie Squad j Sophomores and a few juniors will take care of the majority of positions on the first eleven at Utah State during the fall foot-Iball foot-Iball season, it became obvious j Saturday after Coach E. L. Rom-iney Rom-iney had run some 60 candidates for positions through a lengthy scrimmage and recorded results j Dividing the squad into four teams with the better players dis-. tributed evenly and with an occasional oc-casional substitution for each team the smiling Aggie mentor had sufficient suf-ficient opportunity to see who can do what. Romney announced Monday that he will now start to build his team for the approaching season which opens October 1 with an inter-conference game, College of Idaho furnishing the competition. '.Considered outstanding to date are Murray Maughan and Bob Gooding at center. Warren OGara land "Sleepy Joe" Woodward at : guards, John Ahem at tackle Howard Shurtz and Max Wilken at ends, Wally Braegger and Seth Maughan at quarterback, Lee Car-don Car-don Fred Bohman, and Drum-mond Drum-mond Hoggan at halfback positions, posi-tions, and Captain Cliff Poole and Tracy Maero shutting out other candidates for the fullback post. Murray Maughan and Gooding jboth place their passes accurately 'from the center position.. As a I pivot man Maughan claims more Lri,nrfi and is a good line backer, and Gooding does a beautiful beau-tiful defensive job. O'Gara, the, husky Nephi lad who never played play-ed the game until he was out of j high school, seems to possess; everything required of a guarci. but experience. Woodward, who: approaches the bi-hundredweight i class, looks like a great contri-j bution to the USAC defensive, andj he can claim experience as well having acted as a reserve last-season. John Ahem, who has been coming up since the Utahs brought home the pennant, is the only candidate for tackle showing pro-imise. pro-imise. When he arrived on the campus last week, his team mates welcomed him with open arms, for it was thaught he would spend the football season in Nevada. Speedy Lee Cardon seems to promise plenty in the backfieid and may contribute more to the Aggie cause there, although he seems to be a natural-bom end. Arrival of Wayne Steed, who has been absent all the past week, was announced . with enthusiasm j by the Aggie coach Monday, |
