all of the masters masten to free their negroes and igind then appeal to them to stand by the south couth goshi gosh if we had have done it today the white people and the black people would have been BO ao truit trustful ful and so helpful to each other until we would all now be one people e united and firm standing like a brick bric brickwell kwall aw all against all 0 outsiders ies is got to come to this finally and our thoughtful people see it the other cla day I 1 was riding into atlanta and 7 I 1 had for my companions a mongolian a dago and a christ killer the atmosphere got za so sickening blat 4 at I 1 had to go out on the platform while out on the platform I 1 looked into a stingily built bat illy ventilated dirtily kept car and there was bishop gaines one of the most substantial men in the state by goehl it made me mad to think that I 1 was a georgian and helped to bring about a condition which denied decent treatment to a respectable citizen just because he be was saddle colored and allowed rat eaters bomb throwers and policemen killers the very best attention all the negroes need along this line to change conditions is to bearn learn the lesson lemon of willing sacrifice there is a difference between willing sacrifice and compulsory sac sacrifice rl i be well behaved as the more intelligent among you are and have real self respect t by B v real self respect I 1 mean that kind which will not permit you to accept anything not an actual necessity unless it comes to y you ou in the way it reaches other people most of the hard working negroes who make not more than 75 cents a day would be wise if they walked short distances and saved their money I 1 cannot see how any negro who desires to be considered decent can attend any theater in atlanta As long as you yon cannot deny yourself these luxuries that come to you at the cost of your self respect you cannot expect to be rated very high by the race that denies you yon the negra negro patronage of theaters in atlanta is considerable any young man or woman found in one of them under present conditions is hurting the negro race very much now decent intelligent tell igent white people do not object to a cleanly dressed negro sitting near them I 1 dont I 1 prefer them to the 11 limberger imberger and bologna destroyers that I 1 often find near me the folks are all wrong on what is meant by social equality social equality is never seen nor heard of properly speaking outside of the home or private grounds there is no such thing as being social socia strictly speaking in a public place social equality means that you are ard not strangers or mere acquaintances but that you are so well known kno to each other that you grow intimate sufficient to form a society or social world I 1 go to the die aragon or to the kimball kirn ball I 1 sit down in the dining room mom to eat a meal that is my business there in comes a man that I 1 have never seeli seen before and from his 6 action h been responsible for bringing around the condition of affairs which now exist in georgia and throughout the other southern states the colonels idea of social equality is entirely right and those who are of the contrary opinion have not sense enough to seek shelter when it rains let the negroes of atlanta adhere to the advice which the colonel imparts to thum them ain in reference to attending the theaters and refrain from frequenting any public place of amusement until the managers of the same will permit all self respecting negroes to enjoy all the privileges which are accorded to other patrons and let them withhold their patronage from all newspapers whose editors spend all their time and talent in endeavoring to lower the law abiding and industrious negroes in the estimation of the anglo saxon race let them only patronize such papers whose editors will contend ind and plead for a wider brotherhood the colonel is absolutely right when he says that no question is is ever settled until it is settled right and let all the t he progressive negroes of georgia rise up en masse mass e and thank col baxter for uttering those grand and noble words and let them all regard regardless of their political affiliations nominate and elect col eli baxter to the state legislature so that he can assist in helping to repeal some of the obnoxious laws which have been placed on the statute
