Show OUR REVIEW of cf the past and the future of the american negro by D W culp A M M D THE NEGRO AND THE democratic PARTY the negro has been taught to believe that all democrats have always been antagonistic to every measure which was intended to be of the slightest benefit to the negro race but bat such is not the case we have already elaborated upon the untiring efforts which thomas jefferson put forth for forthe the purpose of stopping the importation of slaves into this country and to secure the emancipation of all the slaves which were confined within the borders of his native state aute and after he had become president he never hesitated in affixing his signature to bills admitting new states and territories whose constitutions excluded slavery james madison james monroe andrew jackson and martin van buren were all democrats and they all signed similar bills iowa was waa admitted in 1838 and martin van buren was president of the united states at that time and he had the honor of welcoming the state into the union whose motto is our oar liberties we prize and our i rights we will m maintain ain i tain we have no inclination or desire to misquote history but it is an undisputed fact that the whig party was the dominant party in most of the southern states prior to 1860 wm henry harrison of indiana nd iana who was elected president by the whig party was in favor of introducing slavery into the hoosier state but john randolph and many other southern democrats declared that it would wo uld be a great evil to allow slavery to invade that territory the campaign of JW 1840 was one of the most exciting political contests ever witnessed in this country martin van buren was the demo cratic candidate for president and john A dix hannibal hamlin md and simon cameron were among his warmest supporters wm henrt Henry Harrison was nominated by the whig party and thurlow weed of new york I 1 daniel webster and ift henry ellry cl day by the father of the Wh whig party w were ere nis greatest lieuten lieutenants auts while that memorable campaign campa 1 lin was at its ia height mr harrison cleared his skirts of abolitionism to the entire satisfaction of all law his friends iri ends congress coad C noe notice jj de declared debated dated abolish slavery joithe in the district of columbia without at ahe the consent of V virginia ar md and 0 maryland and the district d is itself he denounced as a slander the charge that he was an abobo afi e rote he had haaf vow against t antislavery anti slavery W uffe t violated vio lateA jam do IN p braiden Aiden bd CM ariet ur mr va van F scorn fozi rafn kingas nn wo KS A jt T B imai and an frae D i v Ts r aff ahe ns ethelnn W S ka 1 em beere A BET 0 ta mountain blasts of new england says change the cry ahe universal cry is for a chan change chane e he main tamed that the discussion discussion bythe by the citizens of the free states of beavery in the slave states was not sanctioned by the constitution of the united states mr webster said that he had not indeed been born in a log cabin but his eldest brothers arid and sisters had he wept to think of those who had left it and if he failed in affectionate veneration for him who raised it then might his hi name and the name of his posterity be blotted from the memory of mankind he denounced mr van buren for entertaining a selfish disregard for the rights of tl tle the e people his bosom was filled with burning scorn for the democratic candidate because he was not in favor of the national bank nor need the south he intimated have any fear of the whigs about slavery could the south believe that harrison would lay ruthless hands on the institutions among which he was born and 7 educated no indeed for washington and hancock virginia and massachusetts had joined their thoughts their hopes and their feelings how many bones of northern men he asked with majestic pathos lie at yorktown Tork town As that great campaign drew to a close it became perfectly apparent to all the leading poli politicians 1 ticiano that maine would go hell bent for governor kent tippecanoe and tyler too when it was waa ascertained that martin van buren was defeated and that william henry harrison was elected president joe hoxie closed the last whig meeting by singing the democratic party and van buren have gone up salt river only five fire slave states gave their electoral votes to mr j van buren namely virginia south carolina alabama missouri and arkansas the other eight southern states and all the northern states excepting illinois recorded their electoral votes in favor of mr harrison the idea which we wish to convey to the members of our race is that slavery had not become a national or political issue issue prior to 1840 to be continued |
