Show ARE YOU A GOOD SCOUT 00 Recently at the quarterly conference conference confer- confer ence nee at Parowan there was brought out some things in tn the nature of a surprise to many of the older heads in n that there was given a talk by a areal areal I real Scout Commissioner Mr Nelson I Ione one of the instructors of the B. B A. A C. C i ilie le lie told of the aims alms and objects of the Boy Scout work of America After he was through he was followed by Apostle Lyman In a very interesting way he told sonie some incidents ift In the life ife of a Boy Doy Scout Now just what Is s meant by the question queston Are you youa a good Sout To begin with the President of the United States is the first President of the he organization What is the first and formost attribute of a Scout T He lie must first of all be a believer in God In short he must be a man Not in stature or in physical development but ut in the things that go to the making making mak- mak ing ng of a man man Every man can be a good Scout in his every day Y life by doing the things that a boy Scout is taught from his first lesson to do The object of the organization is to develop the boy physically mentally and spiritually He lie is obedient honorable honorable honorable hon hon- loyal respects himself and others he can be trusted is faithful faith ful cheerful and is courteous without without without with with- out boasting or being puffed up Before Before Be De- fore fOle he becomes a Scout he must make a solemn promise as follows On my honor I 1 will do my best 1st To do my duty to God and my country and to obey the Scout law 2nd To help other people at all alf Urns tiros 3rd To keep myself physically strong na mentally ent b a awake awak w. w t j and morally straight e t When we stop to cons consider der a moment the meaning and what these few simple elm sim- pie pic rules mean and in how many ways they can be applied to the daily lives of men and women it is astonishing to see the total disregard that so many men have for the rights of oth oth- ers era If a man is a bootlegger and a breaker of the laws of the theland theland theland land he is not a good Scout and neither is he a good citizen When he takes advantage of his fellow men he is not a good Scout and never can be A man cannot be a good Scout who is not honorable to his fellow fellowmen fellowmen fellowmen men and not willing to do a kindly turn when opportunity presents it it self Article No II of the Scout laws provides that He keeps clean in body and thought stands for clean speech clean sport clean habits and travels with a clean crowd Are you a good enough Scout that you can cross and go along the other side of the street to avoid being in inthe inthe inthe the same gang who go along with a jug of moonshine whiskey t Are you trong enough in character to shun and taboo the dirty filthy yarns of the mob of loafers and feel that it isa Isa is isa a contamination to stop ar nn d l listen to the filth of an evil mind min T short are you big enough to to k s up for what your boy is being taunt tant in his I Scout classes and back him up in his work t Are you a good enough Scout to live above the laws and not be trying to tear down those in vogue now T Are you a good Scout in that when you see a lady coming on the sidewalk and the crowd of men is so thick that she cannot get through you youat youat youat at at least have hae the courtesy to to a asi them to move and to stop all ob obscene ena- ena and ungentlemanly language in her presence T If you do this then it can be said of you JOU you are a man man That Thatis is what your boy is being taught to todo todo todo do if he is with the Scout movement of the town And if he is not so identified why not not Do you want him to be a better better bet bet- ter citizen than you have han been or even as good and would you like to see aee him grow up cl clean an and strong not only physically but mentally as well or would you ou rather be following the bootlegger and partaking of the deadly dead ly Iy moonshine and thus be menace to society and finally end up as a jail jailbird jailbird jailbird bird or a fugitive from justice T We Ve see about us every day the direct results of the teachings of parents at home in that there are so many boys who are not even being made acquainted with the Scout movement movement move move- ment or its meaning and as a result the Sheriff has a job occasionally chasing some one ono of them and they are landed landed land land- ed behind prison bars The seeds of anarchy and lawlessness are taught right light at home in the careless speech of many many parents who find fault with those in authority and little dreaming that the younger minds are being fed Up on the spirit of complaining i at the school teacher the town marshal for trying to enforce the law and thus he goes goos out upon tho the street with the idea that the officers ers ar are tho the bitterest bitterest bitter bitter- est enemies One of the reasons reasons reasons rea rea- sons why there are ate so many tramps and bums on the highways so many men who have little or no education educations is s due solely to the fact that when they were lads in the tho lower grades of the school they came home with so many complaints that tho the teacher did this or did that and they didn't want to go to school and as a result the poor simple minded parents sym sympathized sympathized a. a with the boy and began throwing throwing throwing throw throw- ing rocks so to speak at the said teacher that he or she didn't know enough to teach anything and so the boy got out of going to school and very soon became a parasite on tho the doorstep or society The foundations of governments are laid right at the hearthstones of the homes and if those found foundations are made of sand and rotten selfishness selfish selfish- ness what is the structure going to tob tobe tobe b be f It is a fact that at at age ase of ot sixty years yean ot the average dt D per pe are ars dependent dent on charity or relatives for their daily dally bread WHY WIlY The answer is obvious There has been a dearth of that kind of teaching that makes for the betterment of mankind in the youth of the country that kind of teaching that is being given and must be adhered to if we are to become become be be- come a good Scout The man who has reached the ago age of fifty sixty sixty- or even seventy five need have no fear that he canot carrot learn from the Boy Doy Scouts for it is a movement of progress progress pro pro- gress and service and we need have no fear of being called childish or Dr loosing any dignity if we follow the little fellows some day and see just what they are doing and being taught tx 1 |
