Show republican ORACLE maz semiweekly semi weekly enquirer of io f january 1st ast 1897 under the caption purify parity utah politics contains among other things the following it would please us ns to see every candidate canAida te who makes himself a church issue defeated by a big dig majority it would teach such candidate in the future to play politics fairly and squarely and not raise issues in our state politics that have no place there if young utah permit the old liberal war cry to continue to frighten them there will always be men seeking political prominence in opposition to the church the better way to do is not to recognize candidates who make that an issue and soon our politics in utah will be entirely devoid of the present obnoxious features we commend to young utah judge hendersons Hender sous senatorial campaign we believe they will appreciate a fight made on strictly political principles outside of the church and state cry from the above it would seem that the enquirer reformer believes that all the dross and impurities in the politics of utah are due to the f fact act that some aspirants for office seek the position in opposition to the church perhaps the enquirer stands nearer to the head of the church than we do but notwithstanding that we know that there is not a man in the whole democratic party of utah who is attempting or who would under any consideration seek a public office in opposition to the church or to any church the democrats of utah mr enquirer love religious c and political liberty too well to seek to ride into power upon any pretext rr or false cry whatever no they believe theoretically and practically that there shall be a complete separation of church and state the they y believe in the constitution of the state of utah as a part of the supreme law of this state and the deseret news and the enquirer to the contrary notwithstanding if I 1 there is any antichurch anti church man we I 1 should like to have him pointed out but if the enquirer means that any person who believes and teaches that there shall be no interference by the church in state affairs then we all plead guilty to the charge of antichurch anti church men and vice versa while no democrat will attempt to ride into political power on a false cry so he will not remain silent when a false cry is raised to defeat him who provoked the cry of church interference in the f fall all of 95 who dragged this old issue into the present senatorial fight bistor history 7 will prove beyond the peradventure of a doubt that in neither case did it have its source in the democracy or any member thereof why does the enquirer pose as the teacher of a democratic legislature Is it not aware of the fact that the democracy derives its inspiration from a better source the members of the present legislature do not learn democratic principles in a republican school young utah is not asking the enquirer for any commends or 07 recommends either with reference to judge hendersons senatorial campaign or any other candidates candidate campaign 14 41 young utah appreciates the L fact thac all the senatorial campaigns r are am being fought out on purely political principles outside of the church and state cry would that the enquirer could w appreciate the same fact |
