Show Declare War On Livestock Rustlers Concentrated efforts on the part of the cattlemen of Utah against truck cattle "rustlers" and a hot set-to with state game officials for the control of deer and elk, were two important topics taken up at the thirteenth annual an-nual convention of the Utah Cattle and Horse Growers' association, held at Salt Lake last Friday and Saturday. Satur-day. One of the major questions discussed dis-cussed and one that is concerning the cattlemen, is the increased activity in truckers who ply their vocation at night and cart away fat beef.. steers and cattle. Complaints from several parts of the state were registered of the activities of the "rustlers" and the latter were put in a class with the early day thieves, only perhaps not on such a large scale as the old-timers, old-timers, but sufficiently so to. entail great losses. The stockholders also locked., horns with the sportsmen of the state and i came out plain-spoken that the stock-1 growers would "handle the situation j on elk themselves and take the legal consequences if something mora was not done to control the elk in tho de - j vastation of crops." Stockmen, it was j declared, have been unable to get re-1 lief for damage done through the j legislature, and it was openly vovedi that it would be the intention to- kill elk which invaded private property, I and if legal proceedings were necr.s-1 sary the stockgrowers would band together to-gether in common defense. Sportsmen, maintaining that many of the complaints registered of. elk doing damage, contended that t 'he reports re-ports were greatly exaggerated and severely criticized those making the complaints and threatening to protect their property by killing elk irrespective irres-pective of the consequences. |
