Show COOPERATION IS BEST, COMMISSIONER DECLARES "A study of big game and its relation rela-tion to the grazing and the cattle and sheep industries, carried on in a cooperative co-operative way between representatives representa-tives ..of the industry, the sportsman and the state fish and game department, depart-ment, is the only way in which these two factions may hope to reach a fair solution of the confronting problems." : This is the conclusion drawn by J. Arthur ' Mecham, state fish and game commissioner, in answer to the criticisms criti-cisms launched by representatives of the Utah Cattle & Horse Growers' association as-sociation and to newspaper comment. "Meetings of cattle and sheep men for the avowed purpose of prejudicing prejudic-ing members against game will avail nothing and only bring the two sides at swords point," the commissioner told delegates in convention. "I can not see how we are going to study the problem and arrive at any fair solution so long as such a feeling is cultivated," Mr. Mecham said. "It must be remembered that those interested in wild game and not directly concerned with livestock are in the majority, and if a harmonious harmon-ious solution of our problem is to be-worked be-worked out, considerable generalship must be employed. "The fact that the livestock men say there are too many deer while the .sportsman says there are not, does not make either statement a fact. I don't believe a statement of fact possible pos-sible at this time. "To find the facts is our problem, and it is a problem in which I am very much interested and I am anxious anx-ious to take part. I feel that a systematic sys-tematic study of the big game and their relation to ranges and forests, and to the public, should be under-:iken under-:iken prior to the next legislature in order that proper legislation may be enacted to correct such fairness as lay exist. "It is my desire that the two fac-tidnj- w'ork harmoniously for the solu-tioi).bbt,rSho!uld solu-tioi).bbt,rSho!uld the livestock leaders maintain" their' present attitude, the sportsman and the state department must necessarily organize for defense and carry on their own fight for legislative leg-islative protection," the commissioner concluded. |
