Show Preventing Thumps Will Insure Little Porkers Many cases of thumps in pigs are due to the presence in the young stage of the Ascaris worm in the lungs. These worms mature in the intestines. The young are taken in with water and feed in infected hog pens, lots, etc. ; then they pass by blood vessels to the lungs and there irritate and sometimes infect the lungs, producing some type of inflammation. The young worm is coughed up into the throat; then it passes (by swallowing) down the esophagus to the stomach and intestines, in-testines, where this Ascaris matures and thus completes the life cycle. To prevent Ascaris infestation in p'gs, wash and disinfect the brood sow ji:st a few days before she is to farrow, far-row, and remove her to a place where no hogs have been or to a clean and disinfected farrowing pen. After the pi;:s are born keep them out of and away from all old pens and places where old hogs have been until the .i :s are four months old. Then ihey vill be safe for growing into pnrk lu gs at eight to twelve months of ai;e. |
