Carmel highway is now well over i half done, and, at the present rato of I progress, there is every indication that work on the first section will b ' completed September 22nd, the final limit of the contract, it is announcinl by E. T. Scoyen, park superintendent. superinten-dent. To date the Nevada Contracting company has driven a total of 2,90 feet of the main bore, and, in addition, addi-tion, have l,6.r0 feet of pilot bore cleared out ahead of the crew working work-ing the enlarged tunnel. Beside driving this much tunnel, the company com-pany has opened up five of the six observation galleries and put in 500 feet of lining in pections which appeared ap-peared to be dangerous. Taking all 1 of these facts into consideration and also the amount of work accomplish- rH in rnnstnirt.inrr th nnnrnarli hill- way up the mountain side to thr tun-I tun-I nel entrance, the U. S. Bureau of Public Roads estimated that nt the ! end of June 71 per cent of the work had been done in 73 per dent of the I working time. Since that date pro-I pro-I gress has been steady and the job is i now practically on schedule. During the month of June the contractor con-tractor drove a' total of. 1135 fret of ! the full sized tunnel, or an averago j of 37 feet per day.
