Show Local Boxers Show Ring Leadersf? o I ! Gunnison boxers took all honor:; at ithe American Legion boxing carnival held at the Casino theatre Thurrl'iy I night of last week. And each ; -I test won was accomplished withoi: a great deal of effort on the pari of the local fighters. The real card of the evening was the four 2 minute rounds between Harry Christiansen of Centerfield and Jay Carleston of Mt. Pleasant. Both boys went in strong, evidently figuring on ending the meelee with a kayo, but the Mt. Pleasant youth found he was butting against a stone wall, and availed little lit-tle in his attacks. On the other hand, Christiansen took the measurements of his antagonist and at all times had him at his mercy. Carleston went to the floor in the second round but was saved bv the frontr. The third round settled the matter, when Christiansei found an opening and rapped his opponent, op-ponent, sending him to the floor for the final count of ten. Claire Tollestrup, a favorite with the Gunnison Athletic club, won a decision de-cision over Billy Fiske of Salt Lake, j in a six 2-minute round fight. Tol-lestrup Tol-lestrup outclassed his man on o. ry turn and at r,o time was he in dagger. dag-ger. The battle was staged as a le'ui-er le'ui-er and .some real classy work was shown. j Patrons at the carnival were treated treat-ed to some real sport in the preliminaries. prelimin-aries. Several local "white hopes," and with aspirations to be classed with -Jack Dempsey, gave whirlwind exhibitions. "Duke" Hopkins of Salina, who has a reputation as a boxer, issued a challenge from the ring to do battle with Harry Christiansen. The d?fi was accepted but no date has been set for the bout. |
