Show California Man Addresses Lions AY. F. Holt, to whome the credit belongs be-longs for reclaiming the Imperial Yaflcy in Southern California and converting the vast expanse of bleak desert into blooming fields, was the principal speaker at the regular luncheon meeting of the Lions club of Gunnison at the Kozi last evening. Mr. Holt was in the city as the guest, of J. T. Jones and was enroute to Yidtsoe whore he is installing a large irrigation system. Mr. Holt gave a brief synopsis of his experiences in the great valley in Southern California and his listeners were highly interested. It was some twenty-four years ago that Mr. Hoit went to the hot and sunbaked closer and facing what many had termed an impossible task he Went to work an I today the Imperial Valley, where once the lizzard, homed toads and coyotes roamed, is dotted with thriving cities, industries have sprung up and the farms of that section are famed the world over for the prolific crops. The speaker carried hjs hearers through from the starting of the first iriiga-' tion project, up to the present time, and the lesson proved an ideal object ob-ject lesson of what can and will bo done in Southern Utah. The principal business session of the meeting last evening was devoted to making plans for "charter night." A general committee was named, comprising President J. W. Jones, Lions C. M. Edwards, Ira Oveifelt, N. L. Hermansen and Patrick T. Henry. Hen-ry. The general committee will name sub-committee and it is planned to start work at once in preparation for the coming big event. The exact date for "charter night" has r-.ot been set as yet, but it is thought that it - will 03 held F-ome time the early part of July. |
