Show Hundreds Entertained At Splendid Celebration Amid scenes of splendor and with-a with-a crowd that jammed the walks and strets, Gunnison staged a Fourth of; July celebration last Monday' that1 surpassed any held in this city for' years. And it proved a success f:om every viewpoint. Thousands of vis-! itors from the valley and nearby towns, and from distant points, came to Gunnison to celebrate and it was truly a "homecoming day" and everybody ev-erybody joined in making the festivities festivi-ties a success. A slight shower about noon is the only interference that broke in to man the pleasures, butj this feature was a blessing, rather' than an objection, as the hot weather was tempered somewhat. The day's festivities started with the firing of the salute at sunrise and soon after the streets were thronged with early visitors. At nine o'clock one of the best parades ever j seen in this city was formed at the t head of Main street. The floats were gorgeous in every detail and elicited much comment. Leading the parade was the car carrying the city ' officers. In the line that followed were Goddess of Liberty, the Clinic, ' Bonne Foi, O. N. O., Modem Wood-1 men of America, Pumpkin Shell, Tel-i luride Power company, Martin Peterson Pet-erson Auto company, Star Market, i Casino Motor, Wistaria, Gunnison ; Lions club and civilians. No prizes j has been offered for the best float j and it would have been difficult for judges to have arrived at a decision for the reason that all were good. Among those deserving special mention men-tion were the Clinic, the Bonne Foi, representing the oldest ladies club in the city, the O. N. O. and the Wood-men. Wood-men. Following the parade the Casino was the scene of the patriotic exe-ciscs. exe-ciscs. Soon after th; -doors wera opened every seat was occupied and the vast throng listened attentively to the splendid exercises that had been prepared for the occasion. Mayor Christiansen, orator of th day, 'gave a ten minute talk and briefly outlined the history leading up' to the day wo celebrate so patriotically. patri-otically. All numbers on tne pri-g pri-g am were interesting and well received. re-ceived. . During the afternoon the time from three o'clock until the closing event, was given over to sports. The b'g throng gathered at First East struo where a long list of races, tug-:-war and other events were hotly contested for the cash prizes. One of the thrilling events waa the auto races staged at five o'clock. The first was a race between tha Stevens, owned by Lenno Rosenvall. and the Cleveland, owned by Martin Peterson. Mr. Rosenvall pilotetl hi car to victory, beating the Cleveland driven by Shaw, by nearly half block. The second race was between the Rosienvall car and the Buick owi ed by John Allmendinger. The last race was the most thrilling, and tha Rosenvall car bested the Buick bv some forty feet. The concluding number for tha day was the game of baseball b 'tween a. picked team from the town and members from the Lions club. The Lions, good fellows and all that, were not in it in the game, and at the end of five innings the scova stood 3 to 17. |
