Show FIRST CANNER8. It is said that we are indebted to the Pompeiians for our knowledge of fruit canning. When excavations excava-tions were first made on the site of tbe old city, jars of figi were discovered dis-covered by a party of Americans. When these were opened the contents con-tents were found to be as perfect as when poured into the jar nineteen centuries before. Investigation showed that the fruit had been put into the jar when heated, and sealed over after the Bteain had been allowed al-lowed to escape.
