Former Resident j Passes at Tonopah Albert Modeen, formerly a well known resident of Gunnison, and who in later years became one of the leading mining men of Nevada, died at his home in Tonopah last Sunday following a long illness. The message mes-sage of the death was received by Andrew Modeen, a brother, of this city, last Sunday evening and Monday Mon-day morning Andrew left for the mining camp to make preparations to bring the body to Gunnison for burial. The news came as a shock to the relatives here as none had. been advised as to his serious condition. condi-tion. Due to the prolonged illness, however, it is believed that death came suddenly and unexpectedly. With the passing of Albert Modeen ; the third in the family has died during dur-ing the past year. January 22 of this year the mother, Breitta Chris-tena Chris-tena Modeen, died, and on July 27 Carl Modeen answered the final call. Albert Modeen was born February 28, 1877, at Borstill, Stockholm, Sweden. Swe-den. In 1880 he, with his parents, came to America and settled in the Gunnison valley. Albert, as he was known to his many friends, resided here until he was about 25 years of age and answering the call of the great gold excitement, he went to Nevada where he followed mining as a vocation. With the big rush to Goldfield and Tonopah Mr. ' Modeen followed the crowds, finally locating at Tonopah. In the early days he made investments that proved highly remunerative and he accumulated a comfortable fortune. Later he invested in-vested in Long Beach, Calif., oil stocks, and he frequently ma.de trips to the coast to investigate his inter-' ests. His health, however, broke some twenty years ago, and since that time he had been failing. He was unmarried. The body will be brought to Gunnison Gun-nison as soon as arrangements can be completed by Andrew Modeen, who hastened to the mining camp when the death announcement came. The time for the funeral has not! as yet been arranged and will not j until advices are received as to the j time the body will arrive here. ' j |
