Show Utah Opposed To Radical Movement The Utah public is overwhelmingly overwhelming-ly opposed to radical government experiments ex-periments according to the results of a questionnaire on the subject of government operation of industries sent out to the editors of this and the other states of the country. Of the 3 2 editors who replied, 31 or 97 per cent said that the citizens of their communities were opposed to the government going into business in compel ition with its citizens.- The questionnaire was sent out by the Press Service Company of New York City. While the inquiry was based on the general principle of governent operation the so-called Muscle Shoals 1 1 1 1 now before congress con-gress was used as a concrete example. exam-ple. Under this bill a gov-" gov-" "'4t r? Vownjed . corporation would be given .fri;5-gtmong other things, to produce at Muscle Shoals various fertilizer products and sell them in competition with private manufac turers and dealers. As to tho wisdom of the gover-ment gover-ment adopting this policy toward the fertilizer industry the editors were asked for their personal opinion. Of the 2S editors who gave an opinion on this point, 24 or 8G per cent were unqualifiedly opposed to the scheme. The political affiliations of the 7 Utah papers whoso editors answered (ho questionaire were: Republican, S; Democrat, 1; Independent, 17; and miscellaneous, G. A summary of the results of the questionnaire from tho country at large shows that this opposition to government operation is general. Out. of 5154 editors replying. 44GG or SG per cent voted their communities communi-ties against the proposition. This is an increase of 3 per cent in the ' A' opposition as compared with the re- ; suits of a similar questionnaire sent 1 out" by the Press Service Company a ; year ago in connection with the ques tion of turning the railroads back to v their owners. The papers heard from in the pres-1 pres-1 cut poll are 1S57 Republican; 1350 1 Democratic; 14 5S Independent and '.. 4G2 miscellaneous. Not only did pol itical bias play no part in the replies re-plies but sectional differences seem to have no appreciable effect on the result. The combined circulation jh the papers whose editors replied I is 11.42S.S17. which means a consti tuency of at least 44.000,000 readers. |
