Show Program Rounding Out For Clean-Up Campaign fr-:'':-.... IN SHABBYTOWN By Walt Mason J t A. In Shabbjtown they do not care if things look seedy everywhere. They have not pep, they've lost their grip, they simply sit around and yip, in envy's tones, of Glossyville, the ohining village on the hill. Oh, Shabbytown is punk and gray, and it shows symptoms of decay, and strangers passing through remark, "It surely dates back to the Ark." "Clean J Up Paint Up" makes men frown along the streets of Shabby- J town. A can of paint makes no appeal to this bum village, down at heel; and people think there is no sense in going to so j. much expense; so things are always doing down, and getting worse in Shabbytown. It always gives my sould a thrill when I arrive in Glossyville. The town looks like blooming bride; the people take a hearty pride in making things look clean and bright and in their labors take delight. They're lavish with the helpful paint, selecting colors chaste or quaint, and decorat- ing every shack; thus warding off decay's attack, and making all the building look like buildings read of in a book. And strangers, when they see the town, say, "Here we'll come and settle down, and raise us nineteen kids apiece, and live and die as slick as grease." This happy burg goes right ahead, while Shabbytown is prone and dead. : 4 4-(i44i4i 4 Let the above saying by the noted writer sink deeply into your spirit of "cleanliness" and then let every man, women and child in this community com-munity spurn themselves to the good work that is to be carried out when work is finally started on the cleanup, clean-up, paint-up and spruce-up campaign. cam-paign. While no definite date has been set as yet as to when the campaign will start, matters are being shaped in the several towns throughout the county. June Metcalf, who has been appointed as a member of the clean-home-clean-town campaign, will ask that every effort be put forth to place Gunnison in the top ranks. It will be asked that the clubs, churches, church-es, boy scouts and schools join in the one big movement and make the 1923 clean-up campaign the banner of all years. When the final signal is given to go after the dirt and rubbish there will be many things to consider, and some are herewith mentioned less they be overlooked. How many windows win-dows need repairing; how many fences fenc-es need painting and repairing. Remove Re-move the manure piles at once de-strop de-strop the breeding place for the flies and half of the battle for health has been won. What about your water supply. Is it good and clean. What is being done in disposing of all galrbage. How about the outbuildings and closets. clos-ets. All these and many other sug-.J-gestions might be made, of things that can be done now. How about the roads 'and sidewalks side-walks ? Haul some gravel for paths, in and around barns and yards, it will help mother keep the house more clean. Plan now for flowers, trees and shrubs not alone for your home, but for the school ground and public places. Are you going to plant the same kind of shade trees on any certain cer-tain street or are each of you going j to plant the kind you think best? For a clean-up campaign to be effectual, ef-fectual, there must be' cooperation between the citizens and the public authorities. This will ultimately result re-sult in a "Keep Clean" ordinance being be-ing passed and rigidly enforced. When every town has a regular health department to look after the public welfare, this will be one of the chief duties of the health officer to insist on the enforcement of the "Keep Clean" ordinance. Within the city limits of Gunnison I there are corrals that are not only a! detriment to health, but are a disgrace dis-grace to the community and would not be tolerated elsewhere. Banish the corrals with an ordinance, if necessary, and see to it that they are forever kept from the city. These are but a few of the important im-portant matters that will have to be cared for during the clean-up. Others will come to your attention. And maybe in the meantime, during your idle time, you can give the movement a good start by applying a little energy en-ergy at your own home. Shortly a mass meeting of the citizens will be called. At that time an organization will be effected. A leader and lieutenants will have to be appointed, the forces organized, and everything put in shape for a rapid, quick and clean campaign. , Keep this subject on your mind and instill yourself with the important - idea that Gunnison is to be "the clean town" and let all put it over with a whoop. |
