Our CoUinslon correspondent sends iih information of what might have proven a disastrous ami fatal accident in Hear Iliver Canyon. The U. iV -V aim w. r. u uacK through the gorge was long considered con-sidered dangerous in holh summer and winter. Bat the shaky trestles tres-tles were braced and strengthened; the roadbed smoothed and the earth slides made practically safe.. So in time the feeling uf uneasiness: gradually wore away. I But an accident in the canyon hist Saturday proves that the place still needs looking after. While freight train No. 28, southbound, south-bound, was slowly and carefully picking its way through the picturesque pictur-esque gorge, a snnwslide occurred on the steep mountain which raises precipitously from the railroad track 2,000 feet into the air. The . big piles of snow came thundering down tlte mountain side and struck the train. Several cars were knocked from the track likeso many match boxes. The train was otherwise other-wise badly shaken up. We have not. heard of anyone having been hurt in the wreck. A big gang of men was directly on the spot and the track was soon cleared and trains passing pass-ing to and fro as if nothing hail happened. The train which got this unusual shaking up and the north-hound passenger were delayed delay-ed several hours. |
