It is probably known to comparatively compara-tively few of our country people that in the original plans of the city of Washington as accepted by its founder, found-er, the illustrious man whose name it bears, space was provided for a national na-tional church; yet such is the fact At the beginning of our history as a nation authority was given by congress con-gress to President Washington to select se-lect a site for the capital of the new republic. One can imagine the interest inter-est wherewith he assumed that great responsibility, for whiok, with the experience ex-perience gained in his early youth at. a land surveyor in VWglnia, he was peculiarly fitted. Doubtless not a single detail of the entire project escaped es-caped his attention. |
