Retention of control of the Pacific Mail Steamship company com-pany hy the Southern Pacific railroad was authorized Saturday by the interstate inter-state commerce commission in its first decision under the provision of the Panama canal act requiring railroads rail-roads to give up competing steamship lines, except wrhe:' joint ownership and operation was found by the commission com-mission to be of public advantage.
