Show RED DOOIN IS MADE MANAGER AT READING Was Major League Player for Fifteen Seasons. He Piloted Philadelphia National League Team Through Four Campaigns Cam-paigns Has Lost None of His Old-Time "Pep." Charles S. Dooin, former manager of the Philadelphia National League club, for which organization he caught for 12 seasons, is now manager of the Heading International League club. Dooin, a playing manager, has decided de-cided to attempt a come-back after Red Dooin. being out of baseball for two seasons. sea-sons. Charles F. Kelchner, coach of Albright Al-bright college and former minor league player and manager, is secretary secre-tary and business manager of the club. Reading fans are elated over the selection of Dooin as manager. The sorrel-topped catcher was a major leaguer 15 seasons. He managed the Phillies through four campaigns, assuming as-suming this role in 1911, and relinquished relin-quished it at the close of the 1914 season. As boss of the Phillies, Dooin piloted pi-loted his team into fourth place in 1911, finished fifth in 1912 and barely was nosed out by the Giants for the pennant in 1913. In 1914 the loss of a number of his star players crippled the Phillies and Dooin finished in sixth place that season. He retired as manager nt the close of this campaign, and went to Cincinnati in 1915. He spent the 1916 season with the Giants, after which he retired from the game. Since quitting baseball Dooin has been engaged in the garage and cigar business In and around Philadelphia. Though near the two-score mark, Dooin has lost none of his old-time "pep," always keeping in the best of condition, and Reading fans believe that he will not only be a success as a manager, but make good as a player as well. |
