In Salt Lake City, some of the finest California grapes can be had at six cents a pound, while grapes raised near Brigham retail here for eight cents a pound. The Salt Lake grocer pays at least two cents a pound freight, j but if he did not have to import this fruit he could sell it at four cents and make the same profit. According to Republican doctrine, the home raiser is entitled to this two cents freight per pound (or protective tariff, if you please) which would make his price six cents per pound. But where do ! the extra two cents come in? Is 1 grape msing twice as costly in Utah as in California? We don't believe so, when the Utah producer 1 can make money at wholesaling ! his grapes at four cents a pound. |
