Theodore Roosevelt, Roose-velt, after learning details of the sinking sink-ing of the Lusitaiiia, late Friday night made this statement: "This represents not merely piracy, hut piracy on a vaster scale of our. der tnan any oldtime pirate ever practiced. prac-ticed. This is the warfare which de stroyed Louvain and Dinant, and hundreds hun-dreds of men, women and children in Belgium. It is warfare against innocent inno-cent men, women and children, traveling travel-ing on the ocean, and on our fellow country women, who are among the sufferers. "It seems inconceivable that we can refrain from taking action in this matter, mat-ter, for we owe it not onl to humanity, human-ity, but to our own national self-respect." |
