Work Will Cost Over Four Millioi Dollars and Will Shorten the Route From Denver to Salt Lake by Sixty-eight Miles. Denver, Colo The Moffat tunnel amendment, as carried by the people of .Denver on Monday, opens a way for the boring of the tunnel through James peak and consequent opening up of hundreds of thousands of acres of rich agricultural and coal lands of Colorado and Utah. The people of Denver, in tht election elec-tion on Monday authorized a tunnel commission whose duty it will be to formulate plans for a bond issue which they will prepare to submit to the vote of the people at another election. elec-tion. The proposed tunnel will commence just east of Toll, thirty-five miles from Denver. It will be 6.4 miles in length and its construction will cost from $4,000,000 to $4,500,000. It will shorten the route from Denver to Salt Lake City by sixty-eight miles, as figured by the, Union Pacific mileage, and 1S7 miles as by the Denver & Rio Grande route. The tunnel will be owned by. the city and county of Denver until Auc'a -a time as the Denver & Salt Lake railroad pays the entire amount cf the bonds. The city retains the perpetual rights to carry water and power through the tunnel. |
