Show MICHIGAN WINERS DECIDE TO SUBMIT TO OPERATORS Waive Recognition of Union and Surrender Sur-render Cards in Order to Obtain Work in Mines. Houghton, Mich. The strike of the copper miners in upper Michigan came to an end Monday as a result oi a referendum vote taken among the members of the Western Federation of Miners. The strike had been in effect since lust July when 13.00U men, according to figures of the federation, fed-eration, demanded better wages and workings conditions and recognition of the federation. After the canvass of the referendum vole on Monday by the district board of the Western Federation of Miners, Secretary ilietela gave out this statement state-ment 'Complying witli instructions o( the district board it was decided not to give any separate figures from each of the local unions. Total vote cast in favor of calling off the strike throughout the district, 3,104; total voce cast in favor of continuing the strike, 1,036; total vote, 4,740." Managers of the mines have announced an-nounced that they will re-employ all men who have not been guilty of violence vio-lence as soon as they give up their membership in the Western Federation Federa-tion of Miners and places can be found for them. The present working forces are nearly near-ly equal numerically, mine managers say, to what they were before the strike. At the time the strike begat: there was a shortage of miners, and it is said that most of the strikers will be employed as rapidly as they renounce the union and underground working conditions permit. |
