Show Growth of Flax Industry. The flax industry of this country has reached a stage of considerable importance, but the product is not made use of in the production of linen, but in the manufacture of linseed oil. It is said that at the present time about 2,500,000 acres of land are given giv-en up to flax growing. A problem of the Industry is to make some use of the straw, which now goes wholly to waste, this amounting to about three million tons. Experiments have been made in the direction of papermaking with the straw and this proposition has met with some degree of success, but the scheme is not commercially - practicable. |
