Field Marshal Roberts, who was colonel col-onel in chief of the Indian troops, had gone to France to give them his greeting. Soon after his arrival he became be-came seriously ill. He suffered from a severe chill on Thursday and pneumonia- rapidly developed. His great age, 82 years, mitigated against his recovery, the crisis in the disease coming com-ing quickly. The news of the death of Lord Roberts Rob-erts came as an entire surprise to England. The veteran's devotion to the interests of the army, his hard work in this connection and his seeming seem-ing good health had been the subject of comment since the beginning of the war. He was the most popular military mili-tary figure in Great Britain and a national na-tional hero without rival in the affections affec-tions of the people. |
