Show THE PUBLIC FORUM green river utah august 17 1955 mr gene davis publisher green river journal green river utah dear sir about this discussion of lack of opportunity for the young people to serve their community and the dis interest of older people in youth problems we oldsters haven t been asleep in the near future two programs are going to be initiated that will de pend either partly or wholly on the support of the young people of this community next wednesday august 24 there will be a meeting at the midland hotel to organize a ground observer corp which will present a splendid opportunity for everyone in town to do his bit to protect us all the civil air patrol squadron here will sponsor a cadet program in the near future which will depend entirely on the support given though the school but only vigorous en thusia participation will make it live and grow we can start it t but it is up to you to keep it going with the interests of the young people very much at heart I 1 am Sincerely yours mrs pearl baker to the author of the guest quest editorial green river journal 8 1155 53 in behalf of the many members of the green river civic service club whom I 1 have worked with in the past two years I 1 am writing this reply to your article to last week s paper this is not meant to exclude the numerous other people and eions that have done just as much but to protect the pride of the mem bers hers of the civic service club that served with me while I 1 was president of that group in paragraph 3 line 5 quote be cause the elders have not done one thing toward making athe town toan at progressive or modern modem they have gotten into a rut etc etc on my arrival in green river 4 years ago I 1 found one thing very outstanding for a town of this size that was the city park and lighted ball field I 1 felt that some of our eilders had very good judgement jud gement when they promoted that in my short time here I 1 ve seen a teen canteen provided by the band mothers and the birth of a new modern school and 1 I m sure there are others 1 am m overlooking I 1 personally know there was a lot of time money labor and head aches put into the building of the tennis courts I 1 could make you a list as long as your arm of people who took part in its completion it makes me wonder how much time or money you have given in support of such activity I 1 might add that those of us who completed the job congratulated each other and that s about all the thanks we received I 1 haven t had the satisfaction of seeing anyone use the tennis court more than twice what s wrong with youth playing now paragraph 4 quote they are very non progressive have no pride in how the town looks etc I 1 the word they means me and every one else in town over 21 years of ege age so assuming the word they refers baek to the word elders in paragraph 3 1 I m sure you owe several elders an apology As I 1 assure you that many of the elders keep a very attractive yard and have pride that will match up to the accepted standard of any town 11 argee in part the town could look much better by cutt ting weeds hauling away junk etc I 1 hope who ever you are mr or mrs author of guest editorial next time you will write something that you won t be ashamed ashamed to sign sincerely jim hurst |
