Show youth vas own MA san A anize ize EM PO be W eller creation L y elect officers adult advisor planning civic improvements A group of green river youths have already held two ss as a result of the letter printed in the public forum of the july 28 issue of this paper the lever signed by 50 oung people of green river pointed out the lack of enough recreational facilities here to keep teen agers in te rested and occupied the letter has sparked considerable discussion among the oldsters and some de finite action by the youngsters twenty one youngsters met in the park saturday night but were rain ed out before much could be done they did however appoint three of their leaders michael mccafferty arden sherrill and donald dean to locate some suitable place where an could be held indoors the midland hotel graciously of the use of their basement room for monday evening aug 15 on monday twenty four eager youths held their organizational meeting there and elected three officers sherrill jones became the president of the new group edward hansen is the vice president and norma june Thomp thompson the secretary four adults also attended the meeting they are james nixon of the nixon uranium co the bev rev k IT 4 VV vol ilk green gree river I 1 er journal photo youth leaders from left to right are sherrill jones president norma june thompson secretary and ed ward hansen vice president mr alva opdyke community church mr gene davis publisher and mrs dorothy blake editor the group promises to be civic minded and set up a work project committee to decide on some deaul ate measures that they can take or sponsor for the civic improvement of green river the project corn com cittee consists of bonita thompson robert wilson and hilda hatch it was decided to ask royce hul sey green river attorney to draw up a set of bylaws for the new group they hope to be able to de cide on a name for their tion at the next meeting monday august 22 also at the midland hotel gene davis publisher was unan elected as adult advisor and to act as liason officer for the youthful association and for the town adults just before the business meeting was adjourned mr asked for permission to say a few words he gave the youngsters the surprise of their lives when he handed them a gift of 20 00 from an anonymous new jersey couple who had visited the church on sunday and heard about the efforts of the green river youngsters to provide themselves with opportunities for clean health ful recreation mr opdyke also told the youths that getting anything new started was always a hard task and warned them against discourage ment at setbacks which were bound to appear upon adjournment of the meeting the young people gathered at the city park for a wemer weiner roast and an evening of fun membership in the group is not restricted to students or teenagers all young people even though mar ned ried who are interested in the progress of green rivers river s youth program are cordially invited to attend and take part in the meetings for the time being meetings will be held on monday evenings |
