Show outstanding student in JIL pi ea s C h mum ti eta CC I 1 e imea val 0 0 ga 11 x 0 1 e 4 TJ t Z N 4 0 1 1014 r atlle k ak I 1 1 T v Q 3 green river journal photo ALVA P OPDYKE divinity stud student ent at westminster college as he stands in front of the unlocked door of the community presbyterian church in green river mr air opdyke has gained many new friends during his summer s stay here he is a star tackle on his college football team football star tackles youth h program here green river has been fortu nate this summer in having a young and dynamic student mm min ister working here and serving the interests of the presbyterian community church that alva J opdyke student at West mins ter college in salt lake city has worked untiringly in the in teresta of the church and its par Ishio ners is agreed by all who know him mr opdyke who is studying for the ministry is also on one e of the star football players at west minster college he was born an and d raised in california after his high school graduation aft h worked as a ranch hand a car penter and as a lumber handler before definitely deciding upon the church as his career he hopes to return to college this fall on an athletic full time scholarship though he Is truly sorry to leave green river and its community church at a time when his work is just beginning to bear fruit emphasis on a elating youth program and a good advisor to guide it is badly needed here he said the community church here n needs eeds a permanent minister now he fe feels els preparations for cecur ing a permanent pastor are being worked out and its is hoped that one can be found in the near fu ture for this church he said should it not be possible for the church here to obtain a full time minister mr opdyke said that arrangements might be made for deputation teams from west minster colle college ge in salt lake to come here to conduct sunday ser vices rural church goers are getting to know these teams well he said in fact it was while serving on a deputation team that he became acquainted with the church here the teams are made up of 5 or 6 college age boys and girls who volunteer and conduct complete religious ser vices in the absence of regular ministers or to help out churches who do not have a minister to give regular sunday services mr opdyke has spent the sum mer at the home of mr and mrs sam wilson well known green river old timers |
