Show S 0 oil i I 1 C conservation 0 n s e r v a t i on news by kenneth williams the 1956 emery county tural conservation program was WIs announced by boyd christensen chairman of the county agricultural conservation and stabilization corn com cittee at a meeting held PI in castle dale danald rate flatch and francis wilson were in attendance to represent the local farmers mr air christensen Chrls pointed out that there were only a few changes in the A C P program for 1956 1950 but that these changes were very tai im to the farmers in emery county basically the program re mains the same as it was in 1955 the federal government is inter ested in soil conservation and pro lection to the extent they will share a part of the cost of applying con measures to the various farms throughout the nation the program is intended to get more and better conservation practices on the land As in past years the soil conser service will have the cespon sivility lity of carrying out the technical phases of the program farmers can apply for federal cost share as si stance by contacting fenton nob litt at the A S C office in castle dale I 1 will also try to carry the necessary forms whenever I 1 come to green river the important changes for 1956 are that certain practices related to water conservation and erosion will relieve 70 per cent cost share through the A C P these practices as outlined by mr christensen in m eludes 1 constructing erosion con arol detention or sediment tion dams to prevent or heal gully ing or to retard or reduce runoff of water 2 constructing channel lin ing chutes drop spillways pipe drops drops inlets or similar ture for the protection of outlets and water channels that dispose of excess water 3 Stream bank or shore pro tec fion channel clearance enlarge ment or re alignment or construe tion of floodways levees or dikes to prevent erosion or flood damage to farm land 4 lining irrigation ditches to prevent erosion and loss of water by seepage another change in the 1956 pro gram allows conservation works to be installed on federal lands if it 1 is s for the protection of farmland adjoining all of these improvement a are re important to us in green river each farmer should acquaint him self with the 1956 A C P program and use it to further the conserva tion work on his land the south emery is assuming leadership in cooperating with the federal agricultural research ser vice in conducting some pond lining experiments in this area plastic membranes will be placed in the bottom and on the sides of a pond on the brothers farm at moore utah the lining is expected to reduce seepage losses to a mm nun imura dr C W lawritzen La of the A R S at logan utah will supervise the installation commercial plastic shows consid erable promise for helping us in several ways to solve our conserva tion problems with less expense I 1 will be at green river on thurs day and friday january 12 and 13 contact your district supervisors if you want to see me |
