Show U of utah plans program new building W the university of utah board of regents this week took steps toward construction of a medical center a basic science building a women s dormitory new family living quart ers and a modern basketball arena dr A ray president of the U said there was urgent need for each phase of the unprecedented building program he praised the board for its foresight the basic science building ap proved by the regents some time a go 90 was given top priority reed C gulp culp chairman of the board s build ing committee said U officials would ask the state legislature for an appropriation of 2 for the new building which would replace the present science building one of the oldest structures on campus the new science building would be part of the proposed medical center which would include a pro ejected bed hospital plus the can research building and radio biology laboratory both of which are already operating when completed the medical cen ter would replace the salt lake county general hospital which has served as the teaching hospital for the U college of medicine since 1943 the board boards s medical school liaison committee has reported that the hospital is wholly inadequate for the medical college which now ranks among the nation s finest the building committee was auth onzer to plan for a new women s dorm to help take the strain off carlson hall present faculty facility built in m 1938 family living quarters also will be erected in the next few years to replace stadium village war born housing area for veterans which is in disrepair it is planned to finance new family housing through 50 year government loans to be repaid by rental revenues with utah s basketball team per enni ally high in the national rank ings the athletic department has had to turn away thousands of state wide fans each year including al most all high school and grade school youngsters because of lack of seats in emer einer nielsen field house although no date was set for con st ruction of the arena and no funds provided it is believed construction of the new plant is about four years away sports fans throughout the in ter mountain country hailed the news as a major step toward and improving utah s chance remain a leading basketball school |
