Show KNEW HIM By W. M. Bayliss. EFORE the War God's hellish vi brood Broke loose and drenched the world in blood Our paths first crossed, then intertwined, inter-twined, Heart drew to heart, and mind to mind ; Our friendship grew, of rarest kind. I knew him. When all mankind stood shocked, agape, At hapless Belgium's awful rape, His soul with holy hatred burned, All lesser things of life he spurned As to the aid of France he turned. Though side by side our spirits ran, 'Tis hard to gauge the soul of man. Deep, unsuspected love had he Until assaulted Liberty Called in the Great Catastrophe. A true Ciusader, in the trench He fought amid the smoke and stench. How many Huns he sent to hell The Angel's Book alone can tell. One day he fought. The next he fell. My eyes refuse to dim with tears, Although my heart will weep for years. I'll miss him I'll that day when we Shall meet again, unfettqred, free; Till then my proudest boast shall be, I knew him. |
