Show I Halloween, or All-Saints Eve. Old English legends have it that at the uncanny hour of midnight on this occasion, the witches leave their graves, the live ones sally forth and they play all sorts of pranks upon unsuspecting people. This is where the custom comes among the boys of carrying oil" gates :yid placing wagons astride tall hous, etc. Our western boys seem to have mistaken the day, taking Christmas Christ-mas and New Years to play these tricks. Halloween is the only night observed in this way east by the mischief-loving boys and girls. ChrUtmas is too Holeifin an occa- Mon for cutting up in that way. j Witches are supposed to be respon- J sible for all Halloween depreda- i tions. In several eastern states the boys are never arrested for having a time on Halloween as long as they keep within the bonds of reason. Scores of legends and odd superstitions have been attached at-tached to Halloween. Any of our young ladies who are at all curious as to whom they will marry may solve that perplexing per-plexing question by taking ahaud-fui ahaud-fui of rye and going to the cemetery ceme-tery at midnight on Halloween. As the clock strikes twelve scatter j the rye broadcast, and unless the maiden is to be an old maid, it is said that with the last stroke of the bell her future swain will appear. ini,Lora:..
