SIMON BAMBERGER H ytlMON Bamberger, former state senator, Hi Tp has announced his candidacy for nomina- V X tion for governor at the hands of the H Democratic convention which convenes in Ogden H next Friday. The announcement "was met with H enthusiasm iby his multitude of friends in poli- H tical and business circles.' H Mr. Bamberger was born in Darmstadt, Ger- H many, a little village near Frankfurt, and emi- H grated to this country when a boy. In his early B life ho was emplpyed In New York and then H went to Indiana where he engaged in the mer- H cantile business, later removing to Missouri. In H 1868 he decided to make the west his home H and became interested in contracts with the U Union Pacific railroad, making his headquarters Hfl at Piedmont, Wyoming. He continued with that H road until it became merged with the Central H Pacific. For a time he lived at Sweetwater and H then went to Ogden where he opened the old H WhitehouBe hotel in that city. In 1871 he came H to Salt Lake and took over the property where H the National Bank of the Republic now stands H at Second South and Main street. The upper m portion of the property was called Delmonico's. H f Mr. Bamberger remodeled it and re-named it the H ) j ' Whitehouse, a name which the corner still re- H The following year Mr. Bamberger began the H series of operations which have endeared him H I ' to thousands of workingmen in the state and H which laid the foundation for his fortune. Big H Cottonwood and its ,mining possibilities inter- H ested him and he was a pioneer in that sec- H tion. Park City and Bingham also hall him as H ( a pioneer in their mining sections. H "Working on the plan of engaging in such H business as would give employment to largo H numbers of men, Mr. Bamberger in 1878 became B interested in the Sanpete valley coal lands and HH soon afterwards went to Europe where he financ- Vri, 1 J HBilMiBBHHMI ed the Sanpete Valley railroad which then ran from Nephi in Juab county to various points in Sanpete county. In 1890 he began the construction con-struction of the Salt Lake and Ogden railroad, the pioneer electric line of the Rocky mountain region and which is known far and wide as a model of efficient cpnstruction and operation. Mr. Bamberger has promoted many industries indus-tries such as coal companies, stone quarries, brick yards, lime kilns and other industries or a like character, all employing large numbers of workmen. Ho has always taken a keen interest in the business and social life of the city and has long been identified with all the leading charities of Salt Lake. In politics he has been a life long Democrat and has for many years been one of the leaders of the party in the city, county and state. Excepting as a member of the board of education of the city and as a state senator Mr. Bamberger has never held political office. He is a member of the Alta club, the Elks' club, the Commercial club, the Bonneville club, the Transportation Trans-portation club and the Weber club of Ogden. In a statement of his platform Mr. Bamoer-ger Bamoer-ger declared his belief in the enactment of prohibition pro-hibition laws, a public utilities commission, and the initiative and referendum. |
