Show I W I THE SPECTATOR Yw I iVJ HE coming week gC I wiu finIsh the &. J I conventions and the political cam- 11 I paign can be said ' ly 1 a u n c h e d. jjrH' While it will be a short campaign it ?!&'., promises to be a bitter one in that j kf some plain talk will be indulged in re- ! " garding local affairs for it is on local i t 'c issues that the campaign will be ( f h . fought. The address of the temporary yj-J;' chairman of the Republican county (A convention, Parley P. Jenson, shows ! j clearly the plan of the Republicans !? jjjptt- and the character of the campaign f-f? they propose to conduct. Bamberger- ,"f ism is the Republican issue. His ut- l terances made in the last campaign and those in the early part of his ad-, ad-, ministration are being called and he must explain. He was given by the i legislature a big sum to expend in the I r ferreting out of alleged frauds com mitted in former administrations and in return for the appropriation he promised that for every dollar spent he would return ?1,000 to the people. The appropriation has been dissipated Y . and now the people are asked to for- ,-k get it. Every convention held thus f far by the Republicans has adopted a plank in their platform demanding an i accounting from the governor of this f ( expenditure. They do not propose to i forget it nor do they propose to have ' f the executive of the state forget it. ANOTHER department of the state . k administration is being called to I I account and that is the Fish and Game 3 commission. Utah county Republicans j , have opened the matter and in their j .- county convention held on Thursday r ) last condemned the commission in a j " - v most vigorous manner for selling fish 5 '"" fry from the state hatcheries to pri-l't pri-l't vate parties instead of propagating fr'Jr fish to supply the streams and lakes 3 ? in the state. ' '. TT7EDNESDAY next the Democra- VV tic party will hold its county 5 convention. Indications now are that it will be an unusually lively one. The third term crowd In the City and i ,, County building are determined to put " over their candidates and the other 1 fellows are equally determined that f this shall not occur hence a deadlock ; is likely. The fight is over the shriev- II ality and it is most bitter. The pres- t , ent incumbent, who, when his chief 'T, deputy announced his candidacy, com- '- mended him so highly and gave him ,' a clear field in the race, has conclud- i ed that the office is such a good thing ' that he has decided to contest his deputy for the place. If memory is not at fault, it is recalled that Sheriff Corless was a vigorous opponent of the , third term idea in time past. He may I have forgotten the fact, but there are i others who have not, and when the convention meets he will be reminded of his former stand by the nominating speeches for those who seek to occupy oc-cupy the office he now fills. . VjOR the office of county clerk there is also an animated contest two of the deputies' in the office seeking the place while the incumbent has concluded that he would like another term and is said to have joined forces with the sheriff and will try to put himself over for a third term. And so the war is on. It is a pretty fight with indications that a dark horse may step in and take the bacon. THE ticket named by the Salt Lake county Republicans is without question one of the strongest that the party has presented in years and one which has inspired confidence con-fidence among " party leaders, that it will be elected. Party leaders declare de-clare that this is a Republican year and they also declare that the people peo-ple of Utah have decided to have a house-cleaning in the political household house-hold and that Bambergerism must go not only in state, but in country affairs. af-fairs. THE Democrats of the state will meet in state convention in Salt Lake on Monday for the purpose of naming candidates for Justices of the Supreme Court. There are six candidates. candi-dates. There will be no fusion, it is understood, but straight out Democrats Demo-crats will be named for the office. REPUBLICANS of the state will hold their state convention on Friday when they will nominate candidates can-didates for Justices of the Supreme Court. The contest promises to be lively for there are candidates enough to make the fight interesting. IN the Republican congressional conventions con-ventions which meet on Friday next after the state convention has adjourned, ad-journed, there is no doubt about the nomination of former governor -William Spry from the Salt Lake district, while in the first district either Judge Heywood or William Wattis of Ogden will most likely be named. All of which shows conclusively that so far as Utah is concerned that politics poli-tics has not been adjourned. |
