Harris, Director and Agronomist of the Utah Agricultural Agricul-tural Experiment Station, he book is one of Macmillan's Rural ScienoJ Series, edited by Dr. L. H. Bailey, for merly of Cornell University. Dr. Harris Is probably one of tho best informed men on the question of sugar-beets, from an agricultural standpoint, in the country. He is a graduate of Cornell University and for several years has been conduct ing extensive experiments on various sugar-beet problems; among the most important is his work on the irrigation irriga-tion of sugar beets, sugar beet breel-ing, breel-ing, and the commercial production o" sugar beet seed. Besides his ow.i work he has visited every important beet producing section of the United States and has made a study of their methods and problems. Dr. Harris Is nlso a trained agronomist In other lines. Since he has been at the Experiment Ex-periment Station ho has completed experiments on fertilizing and rotations, rota-tions, soil moisture, alkali and the irrigation ir-rigation of oats, wheat, and potatoes, which have proved to be of great benefit to the farmers of Utah. 'From this vast fund of information "Sugar Beets in America" was prepared. The book is written in a very practical prac-tical way, being intended primarily for farmers and agriculturists, as indicated in-dicated by such subjects as soils, fertilizing and rotations, preparation of seed bed and planting, pests and diseases, and cost of producing beets. Students of the subject, however, will find it none the less interesting since it contains a very complete bibli-(Continued bibli-(Continued on page 11.) AMONG THE BOOKS (Continued fiom page 7.) ' ography and three appendices containing contain-ing many valuable statistics. Several chapters are devoted to such subjects as general view of the industry, development de-velopment of the sugar beet industry, the sugar beet plant, conditions for growing sugar beets.sugar beet raising rais-ing and community welfare, sugar making, sugar cane, by products and world's use and supply of sugar. A special feature of the book is the large number of illustrations collected collect-ed by Dr. Harris from all the sugar beet producing areas of the United States. It contains 42 pages, including includ-ing 32 plates and a number of charts, maps, and diagrams which add much to the practical value of the book. The author of "Sugar Beets In America" Am-erica" is by no means an inexperienced inexperi-enced writer, there having recently appeared from his pen two books, "Principles of Agronomy," which is being used as an agronomy text by practically all high schools of the west, and "The Young Man and His Vocation," which has recently been added to the list of books being distributed dis-tributed to the United States Expeditionary Expedi-tionary forces by the American Library Li-brary Association. His latest contribution, contri-bution, "Sugar Beets In America" is easily the most authoritative and practical treatise on sugar beet production pro-duction that has yet been written. |
