Show SC huels SERVE ant U bear river and elwood schools aim to secure better health of students monday december 8 the bear river school and the elwood school began serving a hot lunch to their students this is an all invocation at the elwood school and Is the outgrowth of 0 a movement started by the ladley of the local ocal farm bureau to secure 01 higher standard of 0 health and efficiency among school children through gli crose cooperation between parents and teachers after the school lunch question had been discussed lie ile meetings attended by parents and teachers eachers 0 of the community it was de ckles to adopt what is called the fruit jar ar method of serving hot lunch this is perhaps tho the simplest and least expensive method yet involved the children bring to school a pint fruit jar ar containing some food which can be warmed in the jar A tank or wash boiler with racks is provided for use in n warming this food at school just as the same equipment is used in canning food in homes the principal at elwood alwood mr meldrum has agreed to take the responsibility of seeing se eang that these hese jars of food are taken care of 0 and warmed armed tor for the childrens lunch about 20 children participated in the warm lunch on the first day it was served the principal seemed pleased with so favorable a beginning and the parents have cause to congratulate themselves on having a principal sufficiently interested in the health of the children to assume voluntarily this added responsibility the school at bear river city is be ginning its fourth year 0 of hot lunch service cc the plan last year was to haye have a a prepared and served by a hired cook this year at the suggestion of the principal mr walker the work will be done by eighth and ninth grade girls thus saving the money usually paid to a cook to i apply on a school mrs walker wite wife ot of the principal generously offers to further this plan by spending a part 0 f each day at the school directing the work of the girls the ladies of 0 the local farm bureau organization will still sponsor the movement and will give such assistance as may be necessary these two commendable examples I 1 are cited with the thought that they might stimulate other communities to get into closer relationship with their schools in ill order that parents and teachers may work together on all problems affecting the children in whose all round development both are so deeply interested |
