Show A r v u L PH M A S E N f A r 7 btty ft nati CALLED BY DEATH came to brigham city sixty years ago ado prominent in church and civic affairs after a life devoted almost wholly to public service patriarch adolph madsen passed to his reward thursday morning at 11 at the family home north 2nd and west street at the age of 83 years he was quite feeble during the past year or so BO and had been confined to his bed tor for nearly a month before his death patriarch madsen was born june 12 1841 on the island of bolland Lo lland denmark ile he was baptized into the church of jesus christ of 0 latter day saints in his native land and when a boy of 16 years left copenhagen with his parents tor for utah the day of sailing was may alay 29 1857 and after a long and tiresome journey with many stops arrived in salt lake city august 10 1860 he worked at big cottonwood until tall fall when he and his brother walked to Drig hain city it was here his public service began which has endured over sixty years his life was devoted mainly to tc church work yet he tilled filled many prominent civic positions in 1868 he was called to serve as door keeper at a the public meetings in this city a position he held lor for years and one of which ho he was very proud owing to the splendid record he made in 1876 he was chosen counselor to supt bupt stephen wight in the sunday school and later held the same position during the ot of J C wixom giving in all 14 years to this work he was ordained a teacher la in 1856 a seventy in 1861 a high priest in 1877 and a patriarch in 1916 november 12 1882 mr madsen was made bishop ot of the third ward warda a position he be held for tor et eight y years ears april 29 1890 he was elected as counselor to stake president rudger clawson he tilled filled a mission to scandinavia in 1891 93 patriarch madsen was called by the late president lorenzo snow to work in the salt lake temple following his return from a foreign mission here he favored as second counselor to the president of the temple tor for twenty thre el years returning to brigham on march 8 1916 on account ot of tailing failing health in a civic way he served as keeper ot of box elder county for 16 years he was elected a member of the city council in 1871 was a school trustee tor for three years was again elected city councilman in 1881 and in 1883 1 was elected mayor ol of brigham city ile he was reelected re elected mayor in 1885 and again in 1887 serving three terms ile he assisted in the building 0 of roads and bridges the laying out 0 of parks the planting ot of trees and in doing all that is re aired in pioneering a new country patriarch madsen married mary wagner of this city in december 1862 surviving are six daughters as follows mrs airs ell eli H peirce salt lake city mrs airs C W richards mrs alice al anson mrs mary AL olsen misses phoebe sevena and daisy madson madsen all ot of this city also a number ot of grand children funeral services wll wil be held sunday afternoon at 3 at the third ward chapel under the direction ot of bishop IL W valentine interment berment will be in the city cemetery |
